The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership

by Jim Dethmer, Diana Chapman & Kaley Warner Klemp

Colm’s Review

One of the most impactful books I’ve read on leadership, self-awareness, and living with intention. It doesn’t just tell you how to lead a team β€” it challenges you to lead yourself first. Each of the 15 commitments is a shift in consciousness, from reactive to curious, from closed to open, from ego-driven to genuinely purposeful. Here are my key takeaways:

1. Take Radical Responsibility

  • Own everything in your life β€” not as self-blame, but as a commitment to learning.
  • Shift from “how do we fix this?” to “what can we learn from this?”
  • The world simply shows up. How we respond is always our choice.
  • Feel gratitude for what happens and use it as fuel for growth.

2. Learn Through Curiosity

  • Above the line: open, curious, committed to learning.
  • Below the line: closed, defensive, committed to being right.
  • Notice when you’re in a drift (lost in thought) and learn to shift back to presence.
  • Practice wonder: “I wonder what world-class looks like here?” Ask questions you don’t need to answer.
  • Every interaction is an opportunity to learn something about yourself.

3. Feel All Feelings

  • Great leaders access head, heart and gut β€” not just intellect.
  • Feelings are physical sensations. Locate them in your body rather than fighting them.
  • The 5 core emotions (anger, fear, sadness, joy, sexual/creative energy) each carry a message β€” use them rather than suppress them.
  • Feelings fully expressed last just 90 seconds. It’s the resistance that makes them linger.
  • To release: locate it β†’ breathe into it β†’ allow it β†’ match it with movement or sound.

4. Speak Candidly

  • Withholding the truth blocks energy β€” say what is true for you.
  • Reveal thoughts, feelings and judgements directly but without attachment to being right.
  • Frame it: “I’m having the thought that…” or “I notice I have the judgement that…”
  • When you speak your truth, you’re speaking about your experience β€” not making a verdict on someone else.
  • Speak with love: how do I say all of my truth in the most loving way possible?

5. Eliminate Gossip

  • Gossip is any statement about another made with negative intent β€” or that you wouldn’t say the same way directly to them.
  • Listening to gossip is as damaging as spreading it.
  • Always ask: would I be willing to say this directly to the person involved?

6. Practice Integrity

  • Integrity is congruence β€” matching your inside with your outside.
  • Built on four pillars: take 100% responsibility, speak authentically, feel feelings fully, and keep impeccable agreements.
  • Be precise about commitments: who does what, by when, and with full buy-in.
  • If you can’t meet an agreement, renegotiate early β€” don’t just let it slip.

7. Generate Appreciation

  • Make appreciation a daily practice β€” in teams, relationships, and with yourself.
  • Recognition fuels energy and connection far more than criticism ever could.

8. Excel in Your Zone of Genius

  • Identify the work that truly energises you β€” that’s your zone of genius.
  • Map your tasks and ask: does this give me energy or drain it?
  • Delegate, drop or redesign anything that keeps you out of your zone.

9. Embrace Play & Rest

  • Play is purposeless β€” and that’s exactly the point. It fuels creativity and adaptability.
  • Life doesn’t need to be serious. Laughter coming from love is a leadership tool.
  • Rest enhances performance. Sleep, downtime and switching off are not indulgences β€” they’re strategy.
  • Practise “yes, and…” β€” take whatever life gives and build from it.

10. Explore the Opposite

  • The opposite of your strongest belief might also be true.
  • Challenge your certainties: Is it really true? How do I know?
  • The energy spent defending a position is often the real cost β€” not the position itself.

11. Source Approval, Security & Control Within

  • Watch out for “if only…” thinking β€” “If only I had X, I’d feel secure/approved/in control.”
  • The wanting itself is the issue, not the thing being wanted.
  • Practice: acknowledge the want β†’ welcome it β†’ ask if you could let it go β†’ rest in the moment.

12. Have Enough

  • Scarcity thinking (“not enough, more is better”) is a story β€” not a fact.
  • Sufficiency is not a fixed amount. It’s a perspective shift.
  • Money, time, energy β€” treat them like water. Flow, not hoard.

13. See the World as an Ally

  • Every circumstance β€” even difficult ones β€” is an invitation to learn and grow.
  • Ask: “Would I be willing to see this person or situation as an opportunity?”
  • Nothing is happening to you. Everything is happening for you.

14. Create Win-Win Solutions

  • True collaboration means everyone’s needs are genuinely considered β€” not just compromised on.
  • Support and sufficiency are not zero-sum. When others win, so do you.

15. Be the Resolution

  • Don’t wait for the world to change β€” embody the change yourself.
  • Ask: “What would integrity, responsibility and beauty look like right now?”
  • The change formula: Resistance β†’ Acknowledge β†’ Allow β†’ Accept β†’ Appreciate.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ β€” A must-read for anyone serious about leading themselves and others with honesty, courage and care. I come back to this one regularly.
